01-18-11 Paint chipping

With the turret chipping done, I moved onto the upper hull. I worked small sections at a time with stiff brushes and warm tap water, removing the paint, forming the chips and rusty areas. It's important to work small areas at a time, panels, to create realistic paint chips. Removing the paint is done a bit different than the HS technique for a faded and worn white wash.
With the rust chipping one must use more water, letting it sit, softening the paint and HS longer that the white wash method. The reason for this is that the paint will "blister" and lift, and it's at this point that you start the chipping with small stiff brushes and tooth pics. For the white wash you have to "scrub" off the paint, which is not all that great for forming accurate chips and rust spots.
In my videos I show how I go about doing the chipping and rusting. The chipping of the paint is the first step in creating the rust so it isn't necessary to try and create the perfect chips. Other techniques come into play to get them perfect.
For now here are some pics of the upper hull chipping.

Here is a link to the videos. I'm still trying to get the hang of doing videos so they may not be perfect.

Next will be the chipping of the sides and lower hull.

01-17-11 Painting

With the light guards correctly placed on the front plate, don't ask why I placed them too high the first time, the model was ready for primer. the model received two light coats of primer, followed by a base rust color when dry.

Next came a coat of clear enamel, followed by two light coats of HS and set aside to dry an hour or so. I then mixed various shades of Tamiya green paints, buff, panzer yellow and white. I wanted a faded green base color. I then sprayed patches of  lighter green,  buff  and panzer yellow to show discoloration.

I let everything dry and hour or so then started removing the paint on the turret. The HS is used to replicate the worn and chipped areas. I am still not too  sure how I will be rusting the hull. I did however paint a white field on the sides of the upper hull and painted a big black X in the white area.
Once this dries and I  will then start the chipping and rusting.
I am also taking videos of the painting and chipping process which I will then post on youtube under "mrscratchmod".

build complete

01-16-11

After a few more hours of gluing on the kit parts, the model is finally ready for painting. I did leave off some parts that would have been removed before the tank was sent of to the range, or got shot off.
The Dragon kit is loaded with lots of extra parts, and by not using some of what should have been added, I now have plenty of Sherman parts in the spares box. I also have an older Dragon kit that will be converted to a BARV range target, so there will be more extras there as well.

Here are a few pics of the finished build.

I hope to start priming the model in the next day or so, then start the actual painting. As for the paint colors, I will be applying a very faded blotchy OD green, and possibly some white or yellow as the "bullseye" with perhaps a big black X painted on the white/yellow field.

I will also be do some videos of the painting and it will be posted on my youtube page under mrscratchmod.

Next update coming soon.

"Rescued From The Range" M4A2 Sherman

01-15-11

After building two rusty Sherman I thought it was time for another. The Kit I have chosen is the Dragon M4A2 late PTO kit no.6462. I had planned this project last year but only got as far as removing the main hull and turret parts to check for fit. I am finally building this model after seeing a good friends motivating build of a sun bleached Sherman, thanks Boots.

What I am doing is a range target Sherman that has been rescued from the range and is sitting on a lot somewhere. As with a lot of range targets, this Sherman is going to look like swiss cheese with all the impact holes and marks on it.

The build is mainly out of the box, with the exception of the dummy gun barrel made from styrene tube. I want to mainly concentrate on the painting, ie rust and weathering. I have an idea in my head of how I want to paint the model, but we'll save that for later.

I worked on the model yesterday for about 5 hours, and another 5 today, and the model is about 95% built. Here are some pics of the initial stages of the build as of this morning.

I used various size drill bits to replicate the impact holes, and a soldering iron for the ricochets. I also added some texture to the model using liquid model glue and a stiff brush.

I also omitted two  of the suspension units and road wheels, just to give it that old beat up look.
