A Rusty old tank- The KV II
Trumpeter KV II kit in 1:35 scale built out of the box. The model was built to represent a tank that was knocked out while it was stuck in a bog some where in Russia, but as it would have appeared many years after the war. I chose to display the model with heavy paint chipping and lots of rusty corroded metal. I used the same rust technique as shown in the techniques section of this site, a very easy and quick technique using the hair spray and salt method.
After the painting and weathering was done on the model, I set it aside for almost a month to work on other models. When I got back to working on it again I was still able to carefully remove more of the paint with a pin. By doing it this way, the paint had time to fully cure and the chipped paint had more texture to it as on real rusted and chipped paint.
The base for the model was pretty much straight forward and quick to make. I started out with a piece of foam carved to the desired shape using the model to get the right look. After gluing the model in place I used some clear craft resin tinted with some green paint to represent the water, this being done in multiple layers until the correct depth was obtained. When the resin was fully cured I started with the ground work using plaster, dirt and vegetation found in my back yard. The painting was done with craft and Tamiya acrylic paint. The final weathering was done using MIG oil paints and dust colored pigments to make the base and model look old. The ground work on this little diorama was done using the techniques commonly used by scale model builders and is very easy to do.
This model was my second attempt in trying to get as close as possible to the real thing. By using various oil paints, rust pigments and techniques modeling a rusty tank wreck or relic is easier than one may think.
